B i o g r a p h y

 

 

Justin Bindley studied singing with Lloyd Strauss-Smith and subsequently with John Cameron. He was the joint recipient of the Novello oratorio scholarship.

 

 He made his debut with British Youth Opera as Masetto (Don Giovanni) and subsequently sang in the chorus of English National Opera (Billy Budd  - new production), Scottish Opera (Les Troyens, Tosca, Fidelio, Billy Budd) , Opera North (Boris Godunov, Don Carlo, Billy Budd) , The London Savoyards (The Yeomen of the Guard, The Gondoliers) and The English Bach Festival (Idomeneo at ROH and Vichy).

                                                      

Mozart opera roles include Papageno (Opera Viva), Masetto(British Youth Opera), Mr. Bluff (The Impressario) (Voices2Go) and Count Almaviva ( Oxford Opera Festival). With Opera Viva he has performed Junius (The Rape of Lucretia), 1st Officer/2nd Commissionaire (The Dialogue of the Carmelites) and Aeneas (Dido & Aeneas) For Voices2Go Ben(The Telephone) , Marullo (Rigoletto) (Hastings Opera) and Eugene Onegin (Glasgow Grand Opera).

 

He has appeared with New D’Oyly Carte Opera ( Sir Richard Cholmondley in The Yeomen of the Guard), The New Savoyards (Impressario – Mr Bluff)  and Carl Rosa Opera ( Frosch Die Fledemaus, Wilfred Shadbolt The Yeomen of the guard and Pish-Tush The Mikado – in Australia and New Zealand).

 

Appearances include performances in Ireland, South Africa, France, Belgium, Holland, New Zealand and Australia. In the field of oratorio , many works including Walton´s Belshazzar´s Feast (Blackheath Concert Hall – in the presence of Lady Walton), Durufle Requiem (London Choral Society – conducted by Ron Corp) and Dvorak Te Deum  (Dulwich Festival). Most recently he sang Simon in The Seasons for Richmond Choral Society.

 

Recordings include Sir Arthur Sullivan´s The Contrabandista (Spanish Officer) for Hyperion , Sir Edward German’s Tom Jones (Naxos), several Gilbert & Sullivan Operas and ENO Billy Budd (DVD).  He was the baritone soloist on the 2011 recording of Liz Upham’s Carmelite Mass.

 

 

Other appearances include  The Pirate King (The Pirates of Penzance) - 2012 Maldon Music Festival, Mr Bluff (The Impressario) for Voices2Go, Sacristan (Tosca) for New London Opera Players and  the Doctor in Pelleas et Melisande for Grimeborn Festival Opera and Bury Court Opera . He covered Yamadori/Comissioner (Madama Butterfly) for Co-Opera in 2013.

 

2014 season included Don Fernando (Fidelio) , Angelotti and Sacristan (Tosca) and Escamillo (Carmen) for New London Opera PLayers , Jack Wallace (La Fanciulla del West) for Midsummer Opera and Sacristan (Tosca) for The English Opera Ensemble.

 

In  2015 he sang Baron Douphol (La Traviata) for New London Opera Players, Lord Mountararat (Iolanthe) for Richmond Choral Society, Theseus (Midsummer Night's Dream) for Opera In The City and Zuniga (Carmen) for Wedmore Opera. He  covered Benoit/Alcindoro (La Boheme) for Dulwich Opera. In October and November he returned to Midsummer Opera as Samuel in Un Ballo in Maschera.

 

2016 saw further appearances with Ormond Opera, including conducting their new production of The Pirates of Penzance. He debuted with Heritage Opera in April 2016 as Benoit/Alcindoro in La Boheme.

Since 2016 Justin has been concentrating on conducting and is delighted to announce he has been appointed Music Director of Kennet Opera from January 2918. First season saw him conducting Dido & Aeneas, Sir Arthur Sullivan's rare opera The Zoo , together with a series of Pop Up Puccini concerts.

Plans for 2019 with Kennet Opera include a revival of The Zoo/Dido & Aeneas in March, a series of concerts in the summer and a full production in November, Full details revealed soon.
